Notifications, now sent by EDII

School notifications now come straight from EDII on both Android and iPhone, in the parent's app and the teacher's. Both get a real Notifications page — what is new, what each message is about, and mark-all-as-read — and the hard parts are handled: a notification for one of several children opens under that child, and a phone two teachers share gives each of them their own. Plus smoother live bus tracking.

EDII Notify Right child, right phone 15 updates

Until now a school message reached a phone through someone else's delivery service. From this week EDII sends them itself, on both platforms and in both apps. That sounds like plumbing, and most of it is — but it is the plumbing that decides whether a notification about your younger child opens under your younger child, whether the bell count is yours or the teacher who used the phone before you, and whether anything arrives at all when the connection is poor. Those are the things this release is actually about.

School notifications now come straight from EDII

Sent by EDII, on Android and iPhone. Both the Student & Parent app and the Teacher app now receive school notifications from EDII directly, on both platforms.
For teachers: period bells, visitors, ticket replies and school messages. All of them now arrive the same way, and a message that lands while the app is open shows at the top of the screen. The period-end bell you already hear inside the app is not sounded twice.
For parents with more than one child: every child, under the right name. If several children are linked to your number you get notifications for all of them, and tapping one opens it for the child it belongs to.
A Notifications page in both apps. It shows which messages are new, opens the screen a message is about, and lets you mark everything as read in one tap.
An unread count on the teacher's bell. The bell on the feed shows how many notifications are still unread, and keeps that count up to date while you use the app.
What to expect the first time. The Notifications page starts fresh with this update and holds your app notifications from here on. SMS and WhatsApp messages from the school stay where they always were, in those apps.

The right child, the right teacher, the right phone

A sibling's notification switches to that child. Tapping a notification for another of your children moves the app to that child and opens it. If the app cannot tell which child a message belongs to, it opens your Notifications page rather than showing it under the wrong one.
A phone only carries the children it should. When you sign in, this phone receives notifications only for the children linked to your number — even if someone else used the app on it before you.
Reading one child's list leaves the other's alone. Opening the Notifications page no longer clears a brother's or sister's notifications out of your phone's notification tray.
A shared staff phone works for whoever is signed in. When another teacher signs in on the same phone, their notifications start straight away without closing and reopening the app — and the bell starts from their own unread count, not the previous teacher's.
A notification never leads to a dead end. If a message points at a screen this version of the app does not have, it opens your Notifications list instead of failing silently.
Small things that stop the nagging. On iPhone the number on the EDII app icon clears when you open the app or read everything. And with no internet, the parent's Notifications page shows the last list it loaded rather than an empty screen.

Smoother bus tracking, and a cleaner Ask EDII

The bus stops jumping backwards. On a slow connection the bus on the Track map always moves on to its latest position, instead of occasionally snapping back to a spot it had already passed.
Voice questions stop when you say so. In the Teacher app, recording a voice question in Ask EDII now stops the moment you tap Cancel or leave the screen, the microphone switches off with it, and you can start another recording straight away.
A new school year appears on its own. The Teacher app's list of academic sessions now follows the calendar, so each new session shows up when it begins instead of waiting for an app update.

The part nobody sees, until it goes wrong.

A notification is only useful if it reaches the right person and opens the right thing. Taking delivery in-house is what makes that possible to get right — the sibling's message under the sibling, the shared staff phone that belongs to whoever is signed in now, the list that still shows something when the connection drops. Nothing on this page will make a parent say "look what EDII added". It will make them stop noticing notifications at all, which is the point. More next week.
